A sumptuous Amarone, aged to the point of drinkability. The tannins have matured into a delicious coil of tension without any obtuse oak or astringency. The fruit has a backdrop of sandalwood, wood smoke, tamarind, cloves, turmeric and Asian plums. There is something exotic and beautifully fresh about this, not dissimilar to aged grenache. Bravo. Sustainable.

The 2019 Amarone della Valpolicella Cavolo impresses with its remarkably pretty bouquet of dusty roses, shavings of cedar and cocoa-dusted black cherries. This is soothingly round yet energetic, with fresh acidity and bright wild berry fruits that swirl as hints of espresso bean and dark chocolate add a bitter bite. Long and staining, the 2019 lingers on as a web of fine tannins forms a classically dry sensation, offset by a tinge of sour orange. Always more approachable in its youth, the Cavolo is an overachiever today but amply balanced for the cellar.
