Wine in Black

Lorsque le critique œnologique Jay S. Miller a dégusté le millésime 2007 du vin rouge 'Selectus' en 2011 pour le compte du guide Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, il a indiqué que quelques années supplémentaires en cave feraient le plus grand bien à cette cuvée. C’est désormais chose faite et le temps a joué en sa faveur. Le 'Selectus' est maintenant doté d’une maturité parfaite et est prêt à se mettre à table. Les cépages syrah, cabernet, merlot et petit verdot se sont magnifiquement unis. Les sols calcaires des vignobles prêtent au vin une minéralité marquée et la dimension boisée encadre le tableau dans une grande harmonie. Nous avons là du grand art viticole et le résultat d’une sélection rigoureuse. D’où le nom de la cuvée : 'Selectus'. Celle-ci est vinifiée uniquement dans les années où le vigneron est sûr de la qualité des raisins. Le millésime 2007 en fait partie !

The Bodega’s flagship is called Selectus: no 2006 was made but the 2007 Selectus was worth the wait. A blend of 30% Syrah, 20% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Petit Verdot, it was aged for 18 months in new French oak. Smoky oak, pencil lead, Asian spices, incense, lavender, and assorted black fruits lead to a suave, dense, succulent offering that features outstanding volume and a 45-second finish. Give it another 3-4 years of cellaring and drink it from 2014 to 2027.

The Haardter 2021 Herrenletten Riesling VDP. Erste Lage offers a clear, bright and intense, well-concentrated and juicy nose of ripe Riesling berries intertwined with substantial mineral notes. From the deepest soils in Haardt, this is a full-bodied, rich and elegant dry Riesling with a saline and silky-textured palate and fine phenolics. The finish is intense and juicy yet also stimulatingly savory and provided with refreshing lemon notes. There is a bit of chalk in the soils, which provides the texture of this elegant and refined yet full-bodied, supple and complex Riesling. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork stopper. Tasted in December 2022.

Un grand savoir-faire, une passion pour les cépages autochtones et les meilleurs vignobles de la région. Tels sont les ingrédients d’une histoire à succès comme on n’en voit pas tous les jours. Le domaine Feudi di San Gregorio est entretemps devenu une référence en Campanie, dans le sud de l’Italie. Parce que le fondateur de Feudi n'est pas seulement un vigneron dans l'âme, mais aussi l'un des meilleurs experts du terroir italien. Le vigneron a planté le cépage autochtone aglianico à différents endroits, à des hauteurs diverses ainsi que sur des sols variés afin de déterminer où il exprime le mieux ses caractéristiques. Motivé par la notion de terroir à la française, il a su créer des vins de caractère qui peuvent rivaliser avec les grands noms d'Italie.

C'est à ce moment que l'édition Feudi Studi est née. C'est à celle-ci qu'appartient 'Candiano'. Les raisins de ce terroir haut de gamme proviennent d'une parcelle unique de seulement 4 hectares située à 630 mètres d'altitude orientée sud. Les vieilles vignes donnent ici à ce « Barolo du Sud » des arômes intenses et le vin obtient 94 points de la part de James Suckling mais aussi du britannique Decanter. Jusqu'à présent, Antonio Capaldo n'offre son vin qu'aux meilleurs tables, et à Wine in Black, en exclusivité !

The 2016 vintage was characterised by snow and frosts in the highest sites at the end of April, reducing the crop by up to 60%. Combined with the extremely long harvest, not completed until the end of November, 2016 is the most heterogeneous vintage ever at the estate. In the Candriano plot quality was clearly very high. Dried herb, dark chocolate, mint, violet and berry aromas lead to a palate with ripe, almost chewy tannins. There's a distinct creaminess which sits alongside plump black and red berries, notes of leather and exotic spice. Still very youthful, its balance bodes well for its future, displaying excellent concentration and tangy acidity on the long finish.

"The Feudi di San Gregorio 2016 Taurasi Feudi Studi Candriano shows enormous lift and balanced intensity from the moment the wine pours from the bottle. There's no slowing this train down. The classic 2016 vintage shows tart cherry, cassis and wild plum. Those sour and lively primary aromas cede to spice, wild rose and grilled rosemary. The wine is tapered and streamlined in terms of mouthfeel with a nice point of fresh acidity to keep things lively." - Monica Larner

Aromas of tobacco leaf, gravel and dried cherry. Medium-to full-bodied with silky tannins. Dried-flower and berry notes on the palate. Juicy, with some lovely aged complexity starting to come through.

A blend of the 2015 and 2016 vintages, the NV Côtes du Rhône S M checks in as the same equal parts Grenache and Syrah raised in tank and barrel. A huge nose of cassis, ground black pepper, garrigue, and olive tapenade gives way to a ripe, rounded, medium to full-bodied effort that has good acidity, building tannin, a seamless, light texture, and a great finish. It's a singular wine that has a big kiss of Northern Rhône Syrah with a touch of the rounded, sexy, opulent style of the south. It's going to drink nicely for a decade.

A blend of 50% Syrah from the Northern Rhône with 50% Grenache from the Southern Rhône, the NV Vin de France SM Second Edition is a fascinating wine, combining smoky, peppery, herbal notes with ripe black cherries. Full-bodied, plush and velvety, Vignon allows that it's "more 2016 than 2015" in style, but no matter how you characterize it, it's a lovely, complex wine.

The 2020 Malbec Reserve was produced from vines on limestone soils in Gualtallary (80%) and Altamira (20%) with concentration and elegance. It has 13.8% alcohol and keeps very good freshness and balance. It fermented with natural yeasts, and 75% of the volume matured in oak foudre for 18 months and the rest in raw concrete. They have had the courage to go for their own style, and this wine reflects that, but perhaps it's the most classical of their bottlings. It has ripeness without excess and varietal aromas of violet, iron and blood with an earthy touch and the chalky minerality in the texture. 2020 was a warm and dry vintage, and the wine manages to keep the poise and has the complexity of the noble origin but without the agility of the wines from 2019.

I was quite impressed by the 2020 Proyecto Hermanas Malbec Cabernet Franc, produced with Malbec from Gualtallary and Cabernet Franc from Perdriel. It has only 13.5% alcohol and matured in 500-liter oak barrels with no new oak. It's expressive and unusually fresh for a warm year like 2020. 10,000 bottles produced.

This blend includes the participation of malbec and cabernet franc from vineyards in Perdriel, about 980 meters above sea level, and from Gualtallary, at about 1,380 meters. The wine was in the barrel for a year, and what came out of it is a reflection of a mountain wine with the herbal notes and the ripe red fruits of wines from Gualtallary, the firm yet juicy tannins enveloping the palate with their stinging sensation. And all surrounded by fruity flavors that are projected to the end.
